members and guests arrive at Lacock
The sun shone for our visit to Lacock and 36 members and guests enjoyed a very pleasant day. For some it was a first time visit. Lacock is a charming rural village untouched by modern development, dating back to the 13th century.

We had been looking forward to this trip as it has been many decades since our last visit.
The day started cloudy but glimpses of blue sky appeared giving us hope of an improvement. So by the time we had coffee the sun was shining.
The Palace gardensThe day was a great success there were many things to see and engage everyones interest. Pictured below some of our members and guests having just avoided the shower!

Many thanks to Bob for organising the trip.

Friday 23rd September
A group of 22 Probus members and friends visited the R N L I in Poole on Friday 23rd September. The 10 o’clock start presented few problems and parking in the area was relatively easy.
We were met by two long standing volunteers, who having introduced themselves split the group into two parts and off we went. We were extremely fortunate in that at approximately 10.30 we were able to see volunteer rescuers in the pool doing an exercise which involved the lifeboat turning over in rough seas. The rescuers secured the contents of the life boat while under water and then turned the boat back to the upright position.
It was extremely interesting to be able to see just what can happen when life boats are at sea in rough weather. The R N L I leader did say that we had been very fortunate as he had done three visits that week and none of the visitors had had the opportunity to see the men in action.
We continued our tour and saw many of the different types of rescue boats, some in for service and some for repair and some purely for training purposes.
The R N L I buildings include an hotel type complex for the volunteers who are in Poole on courses and appeared to be of a very high standard, all the rooms with views of Holes Bay and the Purbecks in the background.
We were also shown the vast number of lecture rooms including rooms where courses were in progress.
The visit ended just after midday when we were invited to have lunch in the restaurant. The choice of food was very good and everyone left having enjoyed the experience.
